In order to boost consumption in the private sector, the Penghu County Government will issue economic revitalization cash gifts. NT$500 cash will be distributed to every resident with household registration in Penghu starting June 1, 2020. An estimated 106,000 county residents are expected to benefit, with a total budget of about NT$53 million. Upon approval of the disbursement case by the county council, cash gifts will be distributed before July 10.
According to the Penghu County government, due to the impacts of the “COVID-19” pandemic, the general public’s willingness to make purchases has declined. The shrinking market economy has affected the survival of industries. In order to revitalize Penghu’s economy, Penghu County Magistrate Lai Feng-Wei and Council Speaker Liu Chen Chao-Ling reached a consensus that consumption vouchers with a face value of NT$500 will be distributed to each and every county resident.
The Penghu County Government has pointed out that initially, the plan was to adopt the stimulus voucher distribution mode. However, since the printing of anti-counterfeiting on the stimulus voucher costs NT$5 million, it was decided that cash instead of stimulus vouchers be distributed to reduce costs and accelerate the delivery schedule, thereby encouraging the general public to spend and accelerating economic recovery.
According to the Penghu County Government, the Household Registration Office’s preliminary plan is to produce a cash gift distribution roster. The Department of Social Affairs will coordinate the handling of the distribution model of cash gifts to pay respect to elders. The cash gifts will be distributed by village (neighborhood) heads, village (neighborhood) clerks, and police officers on duty in the region. For the four level-3 islands of Wangan Township, namely, Dongji Village, Dongping Village, Xiping Village, and Huayu Village, cash gifts will be distributed by local village heads.
The Penghu County Government appeals to parents of newborns born before June 1, 2020, to visit the Household Registration Office as soon as possible to register their newborns, which will facilitate the distribution of cash gifts.
