President Tsai Ing-wen said Sept. 22 that the government is fully committed to defending Taiwan’s airspace and safeguarding regional peace and stability.

The recent encroachment of Chinese warplanes into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone is an act of provocation that threatens to destabilize the region, Tsai said, adding it has emphasized the critical role of the country’s air force in defending the nation.

As commander in chief, Tsai said she is confident Taiwan’s military personnel are fully capable of protecting the country. No one will be allowed to abuse the nation’s airspace, she added.

The president delivered her comments during a planned visit to an ROC (Taiwan) air force squadron based in outlying Penghu County, where she offered her best wishes ahead of the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on Oct. 1 this year.

On behalf of the government and people, Tsai thanked the squadron members for their contributions in ensuring national security.

Tsai’s visit followed a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs voicing strong objection to China’s actions. The ROC (Taiwan) is a sovereign country, and only its popularly elected government can exercise jurisdiction in its territory, the ministry said.

China must stop its expansionary acts and follow international protocols, the MOFA said, adding the global community should condemn Beijing for its dangerous and provocative words and deeds
